We recently visited the workshop of the world-famous watchmaker, Luděk Seryn, who is the only Czech member of the Académie horlogère des créateurs indépendants, an association of the best creative watchmakers in the world, and our client.
The solution used is rather old, from 2019, and will soon be replaced by a new solution, but the existing one had noticeably improved the working experience of everyone involved in the production of the globally unique watches nevertheless. Working with very expensive and sensitive materials requires perfect lighting, no matter whether it’s summer sun, rain or deep night outside. Artificial light must have properties as close to natural light as possible, so that the artist can see details and colours accurately, and to reduce eye strain.
The solution was to install three LED light panels 1600×300 mm above the work tops so that they are below the client’s eyesight level and perfectly illuminate the entire work area. The patented Spectrasol LED technology provides luminance ranging between 1000 and 5000 lx; unlike conventional LED fluorescent lamps, it is flicker-free, suppresses blue and enhances the cyan and red components of the spectrum, so it saves the eyes and stimulates the brain to ensure the client can focus on their work for prolonged periods of time without experiencing major fatigue.
The client subjectively evaluates the lighting as significantly better than the previous one (fluorescent lamps). The eyes are less strained, they do not hurt even after prolonged work. The solution, which is used daily at several workplaces for up to 10 hours a day, has not needed any repairs or replacement of the light sources in the past 5 years.
“When I make a watch, I always want to create something new that no one has done before. I am looking for a technical and artistic challenge, I want to keep moving forward. And for that I not only need enlightened customers, but also a perfectly lit workshop. I’m lucky with my customers, and Spectrasol makes sure the other requirement is also met”, says Luděk Seryn, adding: “The eyes focusing on micrometer details are less tired, and my colleagues cannot stop praising the quality of the light, which is almost indistinguishable from natural light”.
In the near future, the installation will have to be adapted to the new space into which the watchmaking workshop has recently been moved and to the needs of the user. A key improvement will be the installation of a dimmer switch, which will allow watchmakers to regulate the amount of light according to the light conditions outside.
