Světlo Magazine: Light as the Foundation of Modern Education

23.01.2026 | 3 minutes of reading | Spectrasol

The quality of education is influenced by many factors. One of them, which has so far often been overlooked, is lighting. We all feel how a lack of light affects us during the winter months and how tired we become when we have to spend a lot of time in poorly lit interiors. And yet we expect our sleep-deprived children to remain focused for long hours at school and to deliver peak intellectual performance under harsh fluorescent lighting.

Lighting in schools has a fundamental impact not only on visual comfort, but also on alertness, concentration, mental well-being, and the long-term health of both students and teachers. Modern research confirms that the spectral composition and intensity of light influence the body’s natural circadian rhythm and therefore its ability to regenerate, learn, and form memories. Although Czech standards still largely reflect outdated approaches, today’s available technologies already make it possible to use full-spectrum lighting, which, thanks to its similarity to sunlight, supports human health.

Positive experiences come directly from practice. Hundreds of Czech schools have already implemented healthy lighting, and the results speak for themselves, with better concentration, improved academic performance, and a more positive atmosphere in classrooms. Measurable improvements in cognitive functions are confirmed by studies not only from the Czech Republic, but also from abroad.

Healthy, pro-cognitive, human-centric lighting is therefore no longer a luxury. It is becoming a key component of a high-quality educational environment.
