Why light that appears the same “white” to the eye can have a completely different impact on the brain and body

Why two luminaires with the same correlated color temperature (e.g., 4000 K) can have completely different biological effects?

This paradox is caused by a phenomenon called metamerism. The human eye is an imperfect sensor that can be “tricked.” White light can be created in two ways: either by combining the full spectrum from violet to red (as the Sun does), or by mixing only three narrow wavelengths – blue, yellow, and red (as common LEDs do). Even though both lights appear white to the eye at first glance (having the same correlated color temperature, CCT), their physical nature is fundamentally different.

The key to understanding light quality is not CCT, but SPD (Spectral Power Distribution). Common LED sources have a pronounced “spike” in their SPD curve – a high peak in the blue region, with a lack of energy in the cyan and insufficient energy in the red part. The body reacts confusedly to this “incomplete information.” Even though you see the light, our circadian system does not receive enough signal for daytime activity and alertness (cyan is missing), and tissues do not receive energy for regeneration (red is missing).

Spectrasol Technology does not rely on the metameric illusion. Our SPD curve is designed to replicate the fullness of the natural solar spectrum. This means we physically eliminate discrepancies and fill the gaps that typical LEDs suffer from. The result is light that not only looks natural but also carries complex photobiological information essential for the proper functioning of the hormonal system, mental health, and other bodily functions.
