American national standard highlights the biological effects of light

Further confirmation that light is considered a key bio-regulator has come from the United States. The newly defined national standard ANSI/IES RP-46-23 (Recommended Practice: Supporting the Physiological and Behavioral Effects of Lighting in Interior Daytime Environments) represents a major milestone. This recommendation now stands alongside recognized European and international documents such as the German DIN 5031-100 and the scientific recommendations of CIE (International Commission on Illumination). Together, they form an unshakeable scientific foundation for what we at Spectrasol have been saying for years: light is not just about vision, it is a fundamental factor in the proper functioning of the entire organism.

The end of the “lux era”: introducing the spectral diet

This standard clearly states that if we want to support alertness, performance, and health, it is not enough to monitor only light intensity (lux) and color temperature (CCT). The authors introduce the fascinating concept of a “spectral diet”. Just as with food it is not enough to know only the number of calories, with light it is not enough to know only brightness. The composition of the spectrum is what truly matters.

Five pillars that determine our biorhythm

According to the new document, the impact of light on our circadian rhythm, hormonal regulation, and mood depends on these five parameters:

  1. Spectrum: The cyan region is crucial, as it activates ipRGC cells in the retina.
  2. Intensity: Biologically effective doses of light reaching the eye directly.
  3. Timing: When we are exposed to light (morning and late morning are critical).
  4. Duration of exposure: How long the appropriate spectrum affects us.
  5. Spatial distribution: The most effective light is indirectly reflected from large surfaces (ceilings and walls).

What does this mean in practice?

Studies cited in the new standard confirm that quality morning exposure to full-spectrum light leads to faster sleep onset and deeper sleep at night. A higher proportion of biologically effective light during the day demonstrably improves mood, reduces fatigue, and increases cognitive performance.

At Spectrasol, we are prepared for this new era. Since the very beginning of our existence (2018), our luminaires have not followed outdated tables, but have been designed with respect to SPD (Spectral Power Distribution) to deliver exactly the wavelengths the human body needs for its physical and mental health and performance.
