FAQ/Glossary

What is the phenomenon of “biological darkness” and why do normally lit offices make us sleepy?

Imagine a modern office full of light, where you can easily read even the smallest text on paper. Visually, there is plenty of light. Yet, after a few hours, you start feeling tired, lose concentration, and feel like having another coffee. This state is called biological darkness and is one of the biggest problems in today’s indoor spaces illuminated with standard LED fixtures.

The reason lies in the fact that our eyes perform two completely different functions. The first is visual (so we can see shapes and colors), and the second is non-visual (so our brain knows the time of day). Standard LED lights are designed purely for the first function. They shine brightly enough for us to see, but their spectrum lacks key wavelengths (especially in the blue range) that the brain needs to receive a clear signal: “It’s daytime, be active.”

When you sit under ordinary fluorescent or LED lighting, your eyes perceive bright daylight, but your internal biological clock thinks it is dusk or evening because of the missing part of the spectrum. The body naturally starts to slow down activity and gradually prepare for sleep. This creates a conflict between what you want from your body (work performance) and the signal you are giving it through light.

Spectrasol pro-cognitive lighting eliminates this conflict. By including all the necessary spectral components of daylight in the right proportion (including the crucial blue light), it gives the brain a strong, clear signal that it is the middle of a sunny day. Spectrasol lights up the interior not only for your eyes but also for your biological clock, naturally maintaining focus, vitality, and a good mood throughout the workday.
