Brief summary

A 2025 scientific study shows that red light (with a wavelength of 670 nm) could help protect our vision. Scientists examined what happens when ischemia occurs in the eye, a condition in which tiny blood vessels become blocked and the eye is no longer supplied with blood and the oxygen it needs. At such a moment, sensitive nerve cells in the eye begin to die rapidly, which can lead to sudden vision loss. Currently, there is no effective treatment for ischemia. However, experiments on an animal model showed that timely exposure to this red light was able to significantly slow down cell death and suppress harmful inflammation.

Red light as a restart for tired cells

Studies divided rats into several groups. One group was left untreated, while the others were exposed to red light with a wavelength of 670 nm.

The results of the research were surprisingly significant. Measurements showed that in eyes treated with red light, the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting images from the eye to the brain, functioned approximately 3.36× better than in untreated eyes. Key nerve cells in the retina survived better, and the risk of undergoing apoptosis (that is, spontaneous death of a damaged cell) was almost 16× lower.

Less inflammation and a glimpse into the future of light

The red rays also acted like a soothing balm. They reduced dangerous inflammation and oxidative stress in the eye by approximately 1.6× to 2.1×. Scientists therefore believe that red light helps the retina in two ways: it provides cells with energy while also suppressing harmful inflammation in the surrounding area.

Although this is animal research and not a finished treatment, it shows how significant an influence light has on our bodies. The right light spectrum directly affects cell function and is crucial for overall health and regeneration.
