The issue of the harmful effects of blue light regularly appears in the media, but a French study from 2024 brings further findings. It points out that fatigue and retinal damage can occur even at such low doses of conventional LED lighting that we normally consider harmless. The problem is therefore not limited to radiation from screens, but also includes long-term exposure to rooms with conventional lighting.

Testing on albino rats also showed that the risk is not limited to the blue component itself, which destroyed 76% of visual cells in the test. Researchers observed significant cellular stress at wavelengths that are generally considered harmless – a standard white LED bulb caused a 40% decrease in eye photoreceptors, while pure green light caused a decrease of as much as 50%. Although this particular case involves an animal model, the biological mechanisms work similarly in humans, and we certainly should not take these warning signs lightly.

At the same time, the research confirmed that the solution lies in integrating the red component of light. When researchers added red energy to the risk-associated spectrum, cellular damage was immediately reduced by 19%. The study therefore sends a clear message for the future: when choosing lighting, we can no longer look only at energy consumption, but must focus on its overall qualities, especially the entire light spectrum.
