Brief summary

A study by Chinese researchers assessed the impact of full-spectrum LED lighting on the retina of albino guinea pigs and found that the spectral power distribution (SPD) of light plays a crucial role in the development of light-induced retinal degeneration. The researchers discovered that guinea pigs exposed to full-spectrum LEDs experienced less morphological retinal damage compared to those exposed to standard LEDs. Additionally, it was found that full-spectrum LED lighting can reduce retinal damage by regulating endoplasmic reticulum stress, while standard LEDs increase phototoxicity and associated cellular stress responses. The research results demonstrate that full-spectrum LEDs represent a significantly healthier option for indoor lighting for the eyes.

The phototoxicity of full spectrum LEDs is less than that of standard LEDs, even at high luminance, and standard LEDs can induce ER stress even at low intensity (300 lx)

Blue light is associated with eye fatigue, dry eye syndrome, colour blindness, photoreceptor degeneration and retinal damage. The damage caused by full-spectrum LEDs was significantly attenuated compared to standard LEDs, which increased the expression of S-opsin and biochemical markers indicating ongoing ER stress.

Full-spectrum LED lighting reduces light-induced retinal degeneration through ER stress control

The study authors concluded that standard cold LEDs can induce ER stress and protein response in light-induced retinal degeneration (LIRD), while full-spectrum LEDs can alleviate LIRD by regulating ER stress in the retina.
