Brief summary

Quantitative research conducted by Spectrasol in collaboration with the research agency PerfectCrowd analyzes the impact of artificial lighting on the health, comfort, vision, and work performance of the Czech population. The study involved 678 respondents, representing various professional and social groups. The results confirm a high level of awareness regarding the biological importance of light, with 94 % of respondents considering light a factor influencing health, and 91 % identifying natural daylight as essential for proper body function. At the same time, the study highlights high exposure to artificial lighting and its association with fatigue, cognitive load, sleep disturbances, and decreased vitality.

Impact of Exposure to Artificial Lighting

84% of people experience negative effects from common artificial lighting, most often eye strain (57%), increased fatigue (47%), vision deterioration (43%), headaches (38%), reduced concentration (31%), and poorer sleep quality (25%).

Respondents exposed to artificial light for more than six hours a day showed a significantly higher incidence of symptoms—for example, irritability increased from 14% to 39%, and concentration decreased from 22% to 46%.

Benefits of Healthy Full-Spectrum Lighting

Users of full-spectrum lighting reported significant improvements in overall well-being—86% noted reduced eye fatigue, 79% experienced better mood and lower stress during the day, 76% reported higher concentration and productivity, and 75% observed improved sleep quality.

Interest in Full-Spectrum Lighting

In the Czech sample, 63% of employees would welcome the introduction of full-spectrum lighting that mimics daylight. The main motivations were eye protection (55%), improved sleep quality (53%), mental well-being and stress reduction (51%), and increased concentration and productivity (44%).

Implementation and Recommendations

Special full-spectrum lighting is currently used by only 21% of households and 14% of workplaces. The main barriers for respondents were higher cost, more complex installation, and lack of information.

The study recommends that when designing home or work environments, not only the intensity and color of light should be considered, but above all its spectral composition, which is crucial for biological effects. Implementing full-spectrum lighting can significantly improve eye comfort, sleep quality, mood, concentration, overall performance, and health of users.
