School is a place where children spend a substantial part of their day. And we take it for granted that children come home from school tired and “fed up”. Yet all it might take is a small change – better lighting that corresponds to the biorhythms of the human body. However, as Estate 2026 magazine points out, proper lighting in school classrooms is still more of an exception. Outdated fluorescent lights or conventional LED sources unnaturally disrupt children’s biorhythms. They then struggle with fatigue, poor-quality sleep and weakened immunity.
“It is indisputable that light, its spectrum and intensity have an extraordinary impact on a person’s physical and mental health… The Ministry of Health, and especially public health authorities, should consider how to incorporate the assessment of light quality into legal standards, where it is still lacking,” said Chairwoman of the Health Committee, MUDr. Zdenka Němečková Crkvenjaš, speaking about lighting hygiene in schools at the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic as early as 2024.
The solution has existed for some time and is already delivering excellent results in classrooms in hundreds of Czech schools. Full-spectrum pro-cognitive lighting faithfully mimics the properties of natural daylight, eliminates flickering and supports concentration and memory. Czech and international studies (for example, from Gymnázium Na Pražačce) show that under this lighting, students improved their performance in memory and attention tests by 12 to 20% and felt mentally better. Replacing old fluorescent lights with healthy lighting technologies thus pays off for schools not only through energy savings, but above all by creating a healthier environment for children and teachers.
