Problem or Challenge Description:

Poorly lit open-space area for 50 employees of the University Centre for Energy-Efficient Buildings (UCEEB)

Goals

  • Ensure top working conditions for research scientists.
  • Significantly improve the visual and acoustic conditions of their work.
  • Support users’ biological rhythms with the circadian effects of full-spectrum pro-cognitive lighting.

Solution Description:

  • The requirement was submitted in April 2024, also based on experience with Spectrasol technology from long-term cooperation on research and grant projects.
  • The open-space capacity is 50 seats. The lighting installation was part of a larger project focused on reducing noise and improving the quality of workplace lighting. UCEEB staff were involved in the design from the very beginning. The entire space was also redesigned to provide more privacy and comfort for work.
  • Lighting calculations were made for two types of indirect linear lighting:
    • Option a) The best-selling SunLine 45 product with indirect light distribution.
    • Option b) A more powerful MEDD variant, also with indirect light distribution.
The client chose the first option.
  • “We chose SunLine 45 because it best met our requirements for light quality, installation flexibility, and energy efficiency. Its properties proved to be ideal for creating an optimal working environment in the open space,” says the director of CTU UCEEB, Dr. Robert Jára.
  • After an inspection of the premises, the position of the lights was adjusted to maximize the use of light reflection from the white acoustic panels installed on the ceiling. This adjustment significantly contributed to the resulting visual comfort of the new lighting.
Installation was carried out in October 2025.

Result

Users – employees of CTU UCEEB – are extremely satisfied with the Spectrasol lighting after three months of use and are interested in its installation in other areas as well.

Client Statement:

Dr. Robert Jára, Director of CTU UCEEB: “We chose Spectrasol lighting primarily due to its ability to mimic natural daylight, which positively influences the working environment. This technology supports cognitive functions, reduces fatigue, and contributes to the overall well-being of users. Moreover, it fully aligns with our focus on sustainability and innovation in buildings.

We rate the implementation very positively. The new indirect full-spectrum lighting is especially wonderful now in the winter months. The space has gained a completely new dynamic, and I am pleased that all colleagues are responding very positively to the changes. People appreciate the more pleasant atmosphere in the space and mention that they feel less tired and can concentrate better. The lighting feels very natural and enhances overall well-being.”

Why Spectrasol? “We have already implemented several projects with Spectrasol, such as research on the effects of lighting in schools or the development of tools for light therapy and the biodynamic Sunflow lamps. From this perspective, we were not venturing into unknown waters.”

Next Steps:

Given the satisfaction with the solution, the client is interested in using pro-cognitive lighting in other areas of UCEEB in the future.
