Royal Spa – Nivamare hotel, Luhačovice

Circadian lighting and Spectrasol phototherapy in the Nivamare hotel’s Sleep Balance spa programme
Realization: May 2023

Client: ROYAL SPA, a.s. – Nivamare hotel, Luhačovice
Field of activity: spa industry

Description of the assignment:

Working with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMN), the Nivamare hotel in Luhačovice came up with Sleep Balance, a programme of relaxation and healing stays using circadian lighting in rooms and phototherapy. The aim is to improve sleep and promote recovery and vitality, especially for visitors with demanding jobs. In addition, the guests are supposed to learn the basic principles of light hygiene for their daily lives. Lighting should be installed in several rooms as part of the pilot project.

A key part of the stay is light hygiene, which the Spectrasol light system will help maintain.

The aim was…

  • …to create a comprehensive sleep stay programme designed with an emphasis on the principles of light hygiene regimen measures and achieving the maximum possible level of rest for clients. Such a regimen can significantly enhance the effect of other integrated therapeutic-relaxation procedures;
  • …explain and make the most of the benefits of circadian lighting during their stay, such as improved sleep, concentration and productivity, cognitive functions, emotional state and overall health.

Description of the solution, technology used:

  • Tolomeo mini lamps with Vitae circadian bulbs
  • Spectrasol pendant and wall-mounted luminaires for evening and night orientation lighting with Vitae and PC-amber technology
  • Wall-mounted PIR motion sensors
  • Procognitive linear EVA luminaires in bathrooms
  • Spectrasol light phototherapy case
  • Orange glasses for evening relaxation

Main results:

In the morning and during the day, the body is stimulated (in the room and during phototherapy) by intense full-spectrum light that mimics the daily sunshine. In the evening mode, the blue and cyan spectral components of the light are reduced in the room lighting, similar to what happens during sunset. At night, the rooms are lit only with orange lighting that mimics fire. Such optimised light conditions synchronise the body’s time system (circadian rhythms) and optimise hormonal functions, especially the production of serotonin and melatonin.

The Sleep Balance stay promotes improved sleep, vitality and health of the body, and at the same time educates clients in the field of light hygiene, the principles of which they can then use in everyday life and thus significantly improve its quality.

Applied phototherapy equipment helps in the treatment of affective disorders such as seasonal depression. The stay is supervised by a specialised therapist. At the beginning of the stay, visitors undergo an initial medical examination and subsequently undergo phototherapy with full-spectrum pro-cognitive lighting. The stay includes physical activities, aqua fitness and relaxation treatments with unlimited access to the wellness and sauna world and more. The effects of the stay on sleep are continuously evaluated by diagnostic sensors integrated in the beds.

Client statement:

“I would recommend staying in a room with circadian lighting to all people who have a strenuous job, are exposed to high stress, struggle with sleep disorders, chronic fatigue and exhaustion. Among other things, it is also important for all those who want to work on their health preventively to avoid such conditions. During these stays, they can, among other things, learn proper sleep and light hygiene and regain enough energy for the coming days”, says Libuše Padevětová, Sales and Marketing Director of Royal Spa Hotels.

“This is the first project of its type in the spa industry, where we work with the client practically continuously for 24 hours, either through therapeutic procedures, including phototherapy, or with the help of circadian lighting, which is built into their room. Moreover, the therapeutic effect is objectivised using special sensors that are placed in the bed so that they can assess the quality of sleep, but at the same time do not restrict or disturb the client”, explains Aleš Příhoda, Head of Rehabilitation Care and Development of Therapeutic Methods at the Royal Spa Group.
