Description of the problem or challenge:
Lighting design for a highly demanding operation – a watchmaking workshop, where globally unique products are created. Working with very expensive and sensitive materials requires perfect lighting, no matter whether it’s summer sun, rain or deep night outside. Artificial light must have properties as close to natural light as possible, so that the artist can see details and colours accurately, and to reduce eye strain.
So the aim was to create lighting…
- …the quality of which will not fluctuate depending on outdoor conditions;
- …that will not distort the colours of the materials used;
- …that will be sized to fit the work areas;
- …that will be as gentle as possible on the strained eyes of the creators;
- …that will increase concentration and reduce fatigue and error rates.
Description of the solution
Installation of three 1600×300-mm LED light panels above the work area so that they are below the client’s eye level and perfectly illuminate the entire work area. The patented Spectrasol LED technology offers luminance ranging between 1000 and 5000 lux.
Technology or methods used to achieve the objectives:
The selected flicker-free technology with suppressed blue and enhanced cyan and red light component saves the eyes and stimulates the brain so that the watchmaker can work for a long time without experiencing fatigue.
Key results:
The client subjectively evaluates the lighting as significantly better than the previous one (fluorescent lamps). The eyes are less strained, they do not hurt even after prolonged work.
Measurable achievements:
The solution, which is used daily at several workplaces for up to 10 hours a day, has not needed any repairs or replacement of the light sources in the past 5 years.
Client statement:

Eyes focusing on micrometer details are less tired, and the quality of light, which is almost indistinguishable from natural light, is praised by my colleagues”, says Luděk Seryn.
Next steps:
The project was done some time ago and even though the client is happy, the lights will need to be refreshed and adapted to the new space and practical experience. A key improvement will be the installation of a dimmer switch, which will allow watchmakers to regulate the amount of light according to the light conditions outside. The client, a technology innovator, came up with the idea that a sensor that would measure the luminosity on the desktop and automatically adjust the intensity of the procognitive lighting accordingly would suit him best. We will think about it.
