Description of the problem or challenge:

The Felbrova primary school in Svitavy has long been dedicated to innovation and modern approaches to teaching and the use of technology. The next step was therefore the replacement of the existing inadequate fluorescent lighting, which is expensive to operate, and the opportunity to try out full-spectrum procognitive lighting. This was the first application of full-spectrum lighting in local schools in the Svitavy district.

So the goal was to create lighting that…

• …will be best suited for application in an environment where students and staff spend a lot of time;
• …mimicking natural sunlight, thus positively influencing the alertness and vitality of the organism;
• …that is beneficial to the health of students and staff;
• …that will make it possible to test its effectiveness against the existing fluorescent lighting;
• …that will support cognitive functions, alertness, concentration and create a quality learning environment for students and teachers.

Description of the solution, technology used:

• Recessed Spectrasol IBP 1200×300 mm luminaires, direct light beam
• Lighting control – on/off

Main results:

• The old fluorescent lamps were replaced with Spectrasol lighting with procognitive effects. The intensity of the lighting has tripled, according to teachers. It evokes the feeling of natural daylight. This is due to the balanced spectral composition and optimised light distribution and colouration.
• The installed procognitive luminaires, which mimic natural sunlight, have a positive effect on the circadian rhythms of the body. The light promotes alertness, concentration and attention in school and, above all, the health and mood of students and teachers.

Mayor of Svitavy, Mgr. Bc. David Šimek, MBA expressed his delight at being able to try out a new lighting trend in the city’s buildings: “The installation looks really professional and I felt very comfortable while in the classroom. Both students and teachers speak favourably of the lighting. In the future, we are considering using this form of lighting in newly built classrooms“.
