On Tuesday, November 15th, we had the honor of attending a meeting on the topic of harmonizing our internal time with the external environment, which was visited by the founder of chronobiology and former chairwoman, now emeritus scientist of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Professor Helena Illnerová. In the 1970s, she discovered the time synchronization system, more precisely the circadian rhythms of organisms.
Although it wasn’t the first time, meeting this amazing and very significant woman in our field is always enriching for us. “Professor Illnerová captivatingly immersed us in the world of the human organism and its functioning. During the discussion, she managed to enthuse everyone with the topic and made us reflect on how our organism works through the human eye and the perception of light, and where we could head in the future thanks to scientific knowledge and new technologies,” comments Michal Vopat, R&D project manager at Spectrasol.
We already know that light has an impact on the time system, alertness, attention, performance, and mood of a person. Our lighting systems, which contribute to better physical and mental health, are also based on Professor Illnerová’s research. “I was very pleased that almost everything matched what we present to our customers. Basically, everything mentioned there has already been shared with us by Hynek Medřický, the technical director and lighting expert of our team. It is evident that Hynek will one day become one of the true successors and bearers of Professor Illnerová’s ideas,” says David Piller, senior project manager at Spectrasol.
When mentioning an experiment with laboratory animals, in which it was possible to shift the activity of their organs by up to two hours with short exposure to cold light, we realized once again how powerful light is, and it encouraged us to continue working on the development and application of our lighting systems.
