In the Zlín Region, more and more schools are returning to their roots and incorporating into teaching the often-overlooked possibility of the outdoor environment, which supports the health and study results of pupils. Some schools use their gardens and the surrounding nature as natural classrooms. This approach supports more active forms of education and shows that quality teaching does not have to (and should not) take place only within four walls.
In our conditions, however, it is not possible to teach outside all year round – we are limited by the weather, the surrounding environment, and the capacities of schools. Fortunately, there is now a way to bring the effect of natural daylight into the interior as well – through full-spectrum lighting. Many schools across the Czech Republic confirm this. The fact that pro-cognitive light from Spectrasol helps with concentration, reduces fatigue, and naturally supports the health and mental well-being of pupils and teachers is demonstrated, for example, by the experience of a secondary school in Vsetín. Another example of an interesting use of pro-cognitive lighting in education is the Archimedes outdoor classroom.
Of course, nothing can fully replace natural light. As experiences from the Zlín Region show, even small steps toward connecting schools with nature and quality lighting can enrich children’s education and make it more effective. This further example is an inspiration for other schools and for all of us.
